Study finds previous COVID-19 infection, but - EurekAlert

**Note: the release below is a special early release from the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases (ECCMID 2022, Lisbon, 23-26 April ) . Please credit the conference if you use this story ** New research to be presented at this year's European Congress of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases (ECCMID 2022, Lisbon, 23-26 April) shows that, although over time the number of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies falls in both previously infected and vaccinated patients, the performance of antibodies improves only after previous infection (and not vaccination). This difference could explain why previously infected patients appear to be better protected against a new infection than those who have only been vaccinated. The study, by Dr Carmit Cohen of the Sheba Medical Center, Ramat Gan, Israel, and colleagues, also found that, contrary to expectations, previously infected patients with obesity

E. Coli Bacteria Infection: Symptoms, Treatment, Causes & Prevention - WebMD

Image
E. coli ( Escherichia coli ), is a type of bacteria that normally lives in your intestines. It's also found in the gut of some animals. Most types of E. coli are harmless and even help keep your digestive tract healthy. But some strains can cause diarrhea if you eat contaminated food or drink fouled water. While many of us associate E. coli with food poisoning, you can also get pneumonia and urinary tract infections from different types of the bacteria. In fact, 75% to 95% of urinary tract infections are caused by E. coli. E.coli is a normal resident of the bowel, which is how it makes it way to the urinary tract. Some versions of E. coli make you sick by making a toxin called Shiga. This toxin damages the lining of your intestine. The strains of E. coli that make the toxin are sometimes called STEC, which is short for "Shiga toxin-producing E. coli." One especially bad strain, O157:H7, can make you very sick. It causes abdominal cramps, vomiting, and bloody diar

Artificial SARS-CoV-2 Virions Built To Study the Virus - Technology Networks

Image
Scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg and their collaborators at the Max Planck Bristol Center for Minimal Biology at the University of Bristol have developed a new approach to study Sars-CoV-2. For systematic and standardized research of Sars-CoV-2 they built minimalistic synthetic virus particles where they can incorporate distinct structures of the Sars-CoV-2 virus like the spike protein. This allowed scientists to study single molecular mechanisms in a controlled setting, which they can further manipulate and tune. Using this technique to study the spike protein, which has been shown to be critical for virus-host interaction and infection, they discovered a switching mechanism. Upon binding of inflammatory fatty acids, the spike protein changes its conformation, thereby becoming less "visible" to the hosts immune system. The Sars-CoV-2 pandemic has been and is still one of the main global health concerns. Completely understanding Sars-C

The Samaritan's Purse DC-8 cargo plane airlifted more than 13 tons of critical medical supplies from the Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro to Ethiopia on Feb. 15. These supplies—including two anesthesia machines, an x-ray machine, and an ultrasound machine —were sent to the regional hospital in Mersa, which is the primary provider of medical care to some 350,000 people. A Samaritan's Purse press release said the hospital has been significantly impacted by violent internal conflict in the area and lacks the needed resources to effectively treat the sick and wounded. It's in the Amhara region.  "The situation in Ethiopia is heartbreaking. Many innocent people are caught in the conflict, and local healthcare facilities are unable to serve their patients because of a lack of resources," said Franklin Graham, pres
