The heat, combined with low tides, have led to the highest rate of GI Vibrio infections recorded in the state—at least 52 people affected with a usually short-lived GI illness with abdominal pain, diarrhea and vomiting. This is twice the previous high, and has led to a recall of fresh oysters from the Samish Bay. These infections are usually caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus. People with cirrhosis, diabetes, AIDS, or other types of immunosuppression can get a life-threatening, fulminant infection from eating raw oysters.
