Wisconsin doctor warns against using ivermectin for COVID-19 - Spectrum News 1

MILWAUKEE — Many people are asking their doctors for a prescription of ivermectin.

Some believe it will help treat or prevent COVID-19 infection but Wisconsin doctors tell us that's not the case.

Spectrum News 1 talked with Dr. Todd Mahr, an allergist-immunologist with Gundersen Health System, to get his advice for Wisconsinities. 

Dr. Mahr stressed that people should not be using this drug to treat COVID-19.

"Ivermectin is mainly used to treat parasitic infections, primarily in animals," explained Mahr.

He also said ivermectin is not authorized or approved by FDA for prevention or treatment of COVID-19. 

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved ivermectin in both people and animals for some parasitic worms and for head lice and skin conditions.

According to the FDA, side effects for people who use the drug include skin rash, nausea and vomiting.
