Mount Sinai Doctor Shoots Baby In Apparent Murder-suicide: Police

SOMERS, N.Y. (PIX11) – A doctor and assistant professor of medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai shot her baby and then herself, police said on Saturday. 

Krystal Cascetta entered her child's room around 7 a.M., shot her baby, and then turned the gun on herself, authorities said based on a preliminary investigation. The scene was consistent with a murder-suicide, officials said. 

The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident.

"The Mount Sinai community is greatly saddened by the tragic loss of a Mount Sinai Health System doctor and her child. We extend our deepest sympathies to Dr. Cascetta's family, friends, colleagues, and patients," a hospital spokesperson said in a statement.

    • Renowned Doctor, Baby Dead In Apparent Murder Suicide In Westchester

    SOMERS, New York (WABC) -- A renowned doctor for Mt. Sinai and her baby are dead in what police have determined was a murder-suicide.

    Dr. Krystal Cascetta was a Hematology-Oncology specialist with the hospital. The Mt. Sinai website says she saw patients at two different locations in Queens.

    Police believe she shot and killed her child Saturday morning at their home in Westchester and then turned the gun on herself.

    Cascetta's professional profile says she graduated from Albany Medical College and did her residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center.

    Mount Sinai released a statement Saturday night saying,

    The Mount Sinai community is greatly saddened by the tragic loss of a Mount Sinai Health System doctor and her child. We extend our deepest sympathies to Dr. Cascetta's family, friends, colleagues, and patients.
