Health Fair Aimed At Navigating Health Care System For Refugees

Whether it's signing up for health insurance, or understanding a medical bill, navigating the health care system can be complicated.

That's why a local woman started Wheelhouse Health a few years ago.

"I got in to this work after my mom was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2019," said Emily Bernstein, CEO and Founder of Wheelhouse.

From getting the diagnosis in the first place, to navigating a complicated health system, she quickly became the patient advocate for her mom, Luann Keizer.

And she quickly learned one thing.

"Something like 80% of medical bills have some sort of error in them," said Keizer.

That's how she got the idea for Wheelhouse.

"We help people navigate the health care system," said Bernstein.

"I help people negotiate medical bills. I have lots of experience helping people fight denials, overpayments, errors in the bill."

In the last three years, they've helped eliminate $661,000 in medical debt.

And now, it's partnering with the Rhode Island Department of Health to help refugees, and other newcomers, get the health care they need.

"Things like setting up primary care appointments, learning about transportation and interpreters, getting registered for insurance," said Bernstein.

The health fair will take place at one location this Saturday, March 23, from 9 a.M. To 2 p.M. At the South Side Cultural Center at 393 Broad St. In Providence.

"We have interpreters for Spanish, Haitian, Creole and Ukrainian will be on site and then we have the social security administration will be there, DOH, Dorcas International, Genesis Center," said Bernstein.
